sovereign asian art prize nominees, 2007
Gold Leaf founder, Jacquelyn Suter, was chosen by the Sovereign Art Foundation in Hong Kong to be the official nominator for the country of Myanmar for this year’s 2007 Sovereign Asian Art Prize competition.
The Sovereign Prize has become very important for Myanmar artists, since the bi-annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Art Awards, sponsored by the American Philip Morris Group of Companies, is no longer available to them. Due to additional sanctions on Myanmar placed by the United States government in 2003, Philip Morris withdrew financial support for the Myanmar local competition, effectively closing an important door for much-needed exposure of contemporary Myanmar art.
For the 2007 Sovereign Prize, Ms. Suter has selected 16 paintings from 12 artists to enter the competition for the 30-finalist category. Below, we proudly present all 16 selections.
